Having been born in Minnesota, Brooks was a part of the 1960 US Olympic team, but ended up being the final player cut from the team a week before the Olympic Games began. Through the 1960's, he played on the US National teams and then coached college hockey in the 1970's. After winning three NCAA championships as coach, he was selected to coach the 1980 Olympic team.
After getting the job, he immediately began working his team, forcing them to push themselves to be the best.
The team had a few disappointing exhibition games leading up to the Olympics, but they bettered themselves to defeat the Soviet Union Olympic team in a qualifying round and eventually advance and win the gold medal.
